“He took out his phone and started sending a message. There was a jolt of electricity. Trey was extracted.”

Fifteen-year-old Trey has just moved to England from America. Struggling to fit in with his new life, everything changes when he is extracted to Anasius, an alternate world on the brink of war.

In this new world, Trey and his friends find themselves pulled into a web of torture, betrayal and death. Facing the terrors and traumas of a one-sided war, there appears to be little hope.

As tragedy strikes back home, too, the group are forced to put their horror and haunting emptiness aside, and work together to summon the courage to fight - can life be drawn from the crucible of death?

“Unless something changes in the next few seconds, I’m going to get caught,” Jason thought. The combination of fear and sweat were making his skin clammy. Almost imperceptibly, he pulled his black cloak lower over his face and pressed himself further into the dip in the ground. Three Notalians were enjoying the lingering warmth of the dying sun as they moved slowly towards him, deep in conversation.

Until now, their voices had not carried well across the forest floor. Jason was breathing as quietly as possible and he had turned his right ear towards them to try and hear better. The ants were beginning to bother him, but he gritted his teeth fiercely. He lay statuesque.

He pressed his body hard against the earth, hoping desperately that the men would change course and that none of them would look in his direction. He knew that any movement would draw attention to himself, and if the Notalians found him, he was destined for the torture chambers of Crask. The ants were crawling up his arms towards his face. Every muscle was taught.”
